What is meant by brushless DC motor?

Brushless DC motors were invented in 1962 by T.G. Wilson and P.H. Trickey, presented in their AIEE paper titled, “D-c machine with solid state commutation”. A Brushless DC Electric Motor (BLDC) is an electric motor powered by a direct current voltage supply and commutated electronically instead of by brushes like in conventional DC motors.

Brushless DC motors (BLDC) are electric motors that use electronic commutation instead of brushes for the purpose of controlling the speed and torque of the motor. They are also known as electronically commutated motors. Brushless motors have several advantages over their brushed counterparts, including higher efficiency, longer lifespan, and lower maintenance requirements.

What types of brushless DC motors are there?

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors come in different types, and each type has its unique features and specifications. Here is a list of the common types of BLDC motors:

1. Outrunner Motor: This type of motor has a stationary core and an outer rotating casing. The stator is located in the middle, while the rotor is on the outside. Outrunner motors are known for high torque and low RPM.

2. Inrunner Motor: In this type of motor, the stator is located in the center, while the rotor is on the inside. Inrunner motors are known for high RPM and low torque. They are commonly used in radio-controlled vehicles.

3. Coreless Motor: This type of motor has a rotor made of wire wrapped around a cylindrical core. Coreless motors are smaller, lighter, and have higher RPM than other motors. They are commonly used in small drones and medical devices.

4. Hollow Shaft Motor: In this type of motor, the rotor is hollow, allowing wires to pass through the center. The stator is located on the outside, and the rotor spins around it. Hollow shaft motors are commonly used in robotics and automation.

5. Axial Flux Motor: In this type of motor, the stator and rotor are flat and located on the same plane. The magnetic fields are parallel to the axis of rotation. Axial flux motors are known for their high power density and efficiency.

These are just a few types of BLDC motors. Each type has its unique advantages and disadvantages, and choosing the right motor depends on the specific application.

What are the applications of brushless DC motors?

BLDC motors are widely used in a variety of applications, including robotics, electric vehicles, and industrial automation. They are also commonly found in consumer electronics such as Air compressor, Lifts, and Elevators. Because of their high efficiency and reliability, they are becoming increasingly popular in other applications as well. The most common uses of brushless DC motors in industrial engineering are motion control, linear actuators, servomotors, actuators for industrial robots, extruder drive motors and feed drives for CNC machine tools.

How long can a brushless motor run?

The run time of a brushless DC motor depends on various factors such as the motor's power rating, the load it is driving, and the capacity of the battery or power supply. Generally, brushless DC motors can run continuously for hours without any issues, as long as they are properly powered and maintained. However, it is important to note that the motor's performance and lifespan can be affected by factors such as overloading, overheating, and wear and tear over time.

If you are looking for a motor with a long life expectancy, consider a brushless motor. Brushed motor life is limited by the brush type and can attain 1,000 to 3,000 hours on average, while brushless motors can attain tens of thousands of hours on average, as there are no brushes to wear.Of course, we can't say absolutely, but if you have needs, we can customize the products you need according to your needs. Depending on the product and application the service life of the motor will vary according to these.
