An OEM is an original equipment manufacturer that is able to manufacture a product to a customer's exact specifications, or at least as close to the manufacturer's specifications as possible, taking into account any equipment or supply constraints.
For companies that have all the skills and resources needed to conceive a product and execute market research, but lack the production capabilities, especially at scale, OEMs are an important piece of the product development puzzle. Essentially, OEMs allow companies to produce products and bring them to market without having to build, staff and operate factories.
Depending on the customer's requirements, the OEM may produce a new fully custom product, or a heavily customized product from the OEM line. OEMs also sometimes provide product design guidance to ensure the end result can actually be manufactured. Customers usually keep their intellectual property anyway, since it's their design, and only give up some of it if they have to rely on the OEM for more than just manufacturing.

Unlike their OEM counterparts, Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) typically do much of the product design work in-house and in some way rent out their products to other businesses (customers) for sale.
Companies often use ODM as a way to bring ideas to market quickly with lower R&D costs, or because they see an opportunity in the ODM's product range and decide to lease some of them to the ODM. In these cases, it's actually the ODM's products that have just been altered in some way (usually just renamed, but sometimes slightly customized in other ways) to suit the brand that wishes to sell them. This is also known as white label manufacturing.
It is important to note that not all ODMs operate exclusively as white label manufacturers. Some provide customized product services for customers who have good ideas but lack design resources.
